Adjust the contrast and brightness, and color balance of your
monitor to ensure you are viewing the images as they are actually intended
to look.
The full process of calibration includes profiling your monitor
i.e. creating an ICC profile that renders accurate color and requires
third-party software. The viewing tip below excludes creating an ICC profile. It
would be highly recommended nevertheless to profile your monitor with a
suitable software. To
assist you a quick and easy calibration procedure is provided below that will
help you adjust the Black Point of your display and set the White Point
consequently. This helps you eliminate any color cast, make your monitor
grays as neutral as possible. By completing the simple process below you
will have standardized your display of images.
Note: if you change any setting after completing the steps (if you change
the room lighting, or readjust the brightness or contrast for example) you will need to re-calibrate your
display.
To start calibrating:
-
Make sure your monitor has been turned on for at
least 20-30 minutes, that is important to stabilize the monitor
display.
-
Avoid direct light shining on your monitor in the first
place.
-
Make sure ambient light level is lower than your
monitor display.
Next Step: Set the Black Level
-
Turn up the brightness and contrast controls to their
maximum setting.
-
Using the 100% black area below adjust the brightness until the bar
marked with W becomes the darkest gray in the row of gray bars. The bar
marked with the letter M would almost blend into the background but is
still discernable.
-
Note: If your monitor seems to be unable to display
the above requirements the ambient light level is most probably too high. Make necessary adjustments.
-
On a Mac use the bar marked with the letter M as the base
point.
Next Step: Set the Color Balance or White Point
-
While in the previous step the brightness control was
used to adjust the black level, here the contrast control should be
set to adjust the brightness.
-
Reduce the contrast control to create a clean pure
white in the 100% white below area.
-
Use the light gray bars to maintain sharpness and highlight detail.
Calibration is complete!
You may want to check out a sample image to
verify the adjustments you have made.
Note: there shouldn't be be any greenish or bluish or other type of color
cast. If you have the impression the sample picture is too dark or bright
you should re-calibrate your monitor.
